Keeping your house while you test a stay leaves the decision about selling for later. You may find that a shorter visit gives you the change you wanted without a permanent move. Consider whether you can carry your existing home costs alongside accommodation, travel, and personal expenses. This is not financial or tax advice; consult your own advisor before deciding.
How to test it before you decide
Consider renting a month first in Comanche, Durrës, Yunnan, Sarasota, or Boston, subject to current availability and written booking terms. Our free one-week stay is available to those who qualify under our Free Stay Rules; it is not a separate retiree program or a guaranteed stay. Sarasota has a 30-night minimum and no free week. A paid stay and a Laid-Off Pass application are separate, and paying does not improve your chances of selection.
Review the Free Stay Rules before applying for the Laid-Off Pass. Wait for written confirmation before arranging travel, and use the experience to ask whether the daily routine suits you—not as a promise of a permanent rental.
Where a test stay can happen
Comanche, Texas, lists tiny homes and RV lots at $400 per month, with utilities included. Durrës, Albania, lists a room at $500 per month. Yunnan, China, lists $900 per month with three meals a day through six family-run homes with 大莫旅居.
Sarasota, Florida, offers a furnished private room in a shared house near Siesta Key at $1,000 per month, with a 30-night minimum and no free week. Boston, Massachusetts, lists a room at $1,000 per month. Utilities and Wi-Fi are included everywhere. Ask about availability and confirm the written terms before committing; these monthly rates are not your entire travel budget.
