The Invite
An ordinary one-on-one on the calendar. I joined the call. HR was already there. Twelve years of work, and I knew before anyone said a word.
“HR was already on the call.”
The story · By RG Mo
I thought I knew what security meant. Then an ordinary meeting changed everything.
A layoff. A reckoning. A different life.
An ordinary one-on-one on the calendar. I joined the call. HR was already there. Twelve years of work, and I knew before anyone said a word.
“HR was already on the call.”
My laptop. My email. My badge. Gone while I was still on the call. I had spent my career protecting access. Now the security leader was being deprovisioned like any other account.
“I was still on the call when my access disappeared.”
First came shock. Then anger. I sat in the car, not ready to go inside. For twelve years, my title had answered a question I had forgotten to ask.
“Who am I without the title?”
Faith. Family. The RV park in Texas. The house in Albania. The things outside a company that were still mine. I began to see a different kind of security.
“I spent my life securing systems and never secured my own freedom.”
I cannot undo your layoff. I cannot promise what comes next. But I can offer a place to pause. A week without rent. Some quiet. Room to remember that your life is bigger than your job.
“So I opened my homes.”
